What is a Birth Doula?

birth doula hugs mother in labor

I’ll help you prepare your birth plan, communicate more effectively with your care provider, work with you and your partner prepare for roles and relaxation for the big day. I may labor with you at home for as long as you wish or meet you directly at your birth center or hospital. I’ll be there for every contraction and my sole responsibility is your and partner's emotional well-being and support.

For births occurring in remote locations, Virtual Doula Services are available. Contact me to hear all the details and even a demonstration of how this type of support serves a very special role in helping you and your partner shine through the birth of your little one.

Brenda and her associates attend labor & births in and around the Greater Portland area including Beaverton, Hillsboro, Newberg, Gresham, Happy Valley, Wilsonville and Sherwood, Oregon. She also offers virtual birth & postpartum doula services to families all over the United States. Both live and virtual breastfeeding support and newborn care training are on my list of specialties!

What does a Postpartum Doula do?

certified birth doula and postpartum doula holds newborn and smiles

Evidence shows the tremendous need and benefit of postpartum support. All new families could benefit from hiring a Postpartum Doula, and there’s a Postpartum Doula for every mother!

I lovingly provide breastfeeding support, massage, simplifying newborn care, bathing, nail trimming, newborn massage, infant CPR, support for families experiencing loss, nutrition, and meal preparation. I may also do simple shopping and errands as well as serve as an extra set of hands and help mom have quiet time to nap, groom and care for herself. I will be there to assist your new family to ease into their new roles as you welcome this new addition to the household.

I am highly experienced in caring for a postpartum mother and possess special skills to nurture and comfort the mother’s physical and emotional needs. My guidance is based on the mother’s individual desires and requests. I’ve been described by one client as “a non-judgmental mother-in-law”!

Some families need a Postpartum Doula full-time, while others schedule certain days and hours. Sometimes, just a few hours a week is all you need if that is what the family wishes.
